Hello, and welcome to your Joyful Rebel Pep Talk. My hope is that this finds you when you need it the most and that it gives you a boost of confidence, reminds you that the world needs you exactly as you are, and above all, makes you feel less alone. So chances are you'll listen to this when you might be feeling a little bit deflated, a little bit or a lot bit burnt out, and you don't feel like your general sparkly self. As a joyful rebel, you tend to thrive on your excitement about things, your curiosity, having shiny objects to go and look at, and getting lost in something. And when you're not and when that just doesn't feel even accessible to you, it can feel like a huge piece of you is missing. Not only that, joyful rebels tend to get a pretty bad rep when it comes to being into all of the things and being insatiably curious. It can genuinely come as a big surprise to realize that not everybody sees the world in the way that you see it, and we also tend to live in a world where specialists are most valued. And being multipassionate and being a jack of all trades can be seen as a negative thing, and I honestly could not disagree more.
While it can be so easy to be and feel misunderstood, And I know only too well that that can be an absolutely shitty feeling. So much of the hope in the world and the creativity in the world comes from joyful rebels and those people who love to dive into so many different things, who love life and just bring so much joy to stuff. So if you're giving yourself a hard time for going out in all the different directions or you're being criticized by dream shitters, well intentioned or not, about what your latest thing is. Own the fact that you embrace life, you embrace its multitudes, and that is a superpower, definitely not a weakness. Now you might also be listening to this being completely overwhelmed by just how many ideas you have or how many directions you want to go in and how there is never enough time in the day, you don't have the energy or you're feeling like you never finish anything. Well, first things first, and I'm gonna get a bit bossy here. You, my dear, have finished many things, and you make progress on many things. I like to think about being multipassionate as a bit like having a massive jug and a load of colorful cups.
Now as a multi passionate, you are adding to those cups all of those times. But because not all of the water from 1 jug is going into 1 cup, it can be really hard to see the progress you're making, which is why I'm a huge fan of keeping a track of your projects and your wins with stickers, but also giving yourself credit for what you do do. And on top of that, giving yourself permission to let things go. One of the biggest takeaways I have from the fabulous Barbara Sher is that sometimes we don't finish things because we got what we came for. Maybe we don't actually have to write the whole book, but writing that plot summary really pulled us out of a creative slump. Maybe it's okay that the website didn't get finished because you fell down a graphic design rabbit hole and found something you loved even more. And maybe some things are on hold for a while while they're not aligned with the season of life you're in, and they're gonna bring you a lot more joy later. All of this is to say, you're not doing anything wrong, and nothing is ever wasted.
If you think about the way that glitter just goes fucking everywhere, that is true for the skills and the interests and the knowledge that you build along the way. You cannot help but take different things from different areas, and that will only make your projects even richer and even more you. Now on the topic of being even more you, I just wanna remind you that it is okay to do things just for yourself. While I myself am a messy rebel, there are massive overlap between messy and joyful rebels in the fact that we can get caught up in perfectionism, and we can set impossibly high and also cruel standards on ourselves. So in case you need to hear it today, your half arsing or your 50% is most people's 1,000 percent, and you also get to say no to things that no longer light you up. And when it comes to things that you say yes to, you can say yes to something simply because it feels good or it brings you joy. It does not have to make sense on paper. And if anything, I really recommend you use joy as a filter.
If you feel like you have a 1,000,000 ideas you could work on, it is perfectly acceptable to use joy as your main filter and lens and go with the one that makes you feel, like I said, the most joyful, but also the most you. Going back to what I was saying earlier, nothing is ever wasted, and you are allowed to go down the rabbit holes, especially if you're feeling a bit shit because new things and new adventures, they really do help, and your brain tends to thrive on that. You might sometimes feel like you've got a hummingbird brain or feel pretty scattered, And maybe it's actually about working with your brain rather than against it, leaning into the quirky ways that you work, remembering that you also have so much more fun when you work with yourself, and that also tends to be when you produce your best work. And when I say best work, I'm not talking about perfectionism. I'm talking about the truly colourful and courageous and contagious things that you do that not only light you up but really light other people up too. The truth is that sometimes it does feel hard to survive, let alone thrive as a joyful rebel. Sometimes your sparkle and your general optimism may be taken by other people as naivety or just completely misunderstood, but I say fuck them. Other people's shit is generally that.
It's their shit they're projecting onto you and it is nothing about you. Your joyful rebel nature may rub somebody up the wrong way because it reminds them of all the things that they wished they could bring to their life and it might highlight their own lack of joy, but that is not yours to take on. You do not need to take on the world's problems and know that just by you being you, doing nothing more than just existing as you are, already brings so much glitter and sparkle to the world. And don't change for anyone. Know that time for you and your projects and what lights you up is a necessity and not a luxury. Know that you are a rare unicorn in a world that sometimes simply feels like shit on toast. And in the words of the fabulous doctor May c Jemisin, don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity or your curiosity. It's your place in the world.
It's your life. Go on and do all you can with it and make it the life you want to live. So I hope this joyful rebel pep talk has helped you feel less alone and maybe 1% brighter. It's okay not to always feel your sparkly self. That is completely to be expected even if it does feel a bit shitty at the time, and I hope you feel a bit less shitty soon. And I hope you also know that you are part of a community of so many fabulous joyful rebels who really do get it, and the world needs you exactly as you are. Now if you enjoyed this pep talk, there are more where they came from. I started my podcast at Daily Pep because it was exactly what I needed, reminders to keep going as someone who often feels like a square peg in a round hole.
Short and snappy, often sweary and sassy, they're reminders that it is more than okay to be your fabulous quirky self, that the world needs you the way you are and a daily dose of bullshit free encouragement and rebel rising. New episodes are released every weekday at 6 AM UK time, and there are now over 1,000 episodes. So if you fancy starting your morning with a compassionate bang or you need multiple pep talks to help you get out of bed, that is exactly what they're there for. And you can listen by looking at the daily pet on any podcast app or go on to the rebelrousers.comforward/dailypep. And if podcasts aren't your thing, every week I send a letter of rebellion to my fabulous email community where I share about my own struggles and document my own journey pretty vulnerably with my own field notes of building a life I love. So if you'd like to get them, you can go to the rebelrousers.com/letters and I'd love to see you in your inbox. But for now, I hope the rest of your day gets brighter, you find some unexpected joy, and you remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
